An .iso file is a disk image, which can be burnt onto a Blu-ray disc or played on Mac, but can not be streamed-it's not a streaming media format. So don't blame PLEX media hub for not streaming Blu-ray ISO to WD TV Live Plus media player, as not any DLNA streaming media hub actually streams .iso files. In order to stream Blu-ray movie to HD media player/HDTV, you have to convert Blu-ray ISO to streaming media format, e.g. MKV or MP4. Ripping Blu-ray ISO to MKV 1080p will help you keep stunning video quality while reduce file size greatly. (Blu-ray ISO files always play wonderfully, but take up a freaking load of drive space. The following guide shows you how to convert Blu-ray ISO to MKV 1080p video so as to stream Blu-ray movie from Mac HDD.

Why is ByteCopy the best choice for ripping Blu-ray movies to HD media player?

When people rip Blu-ray for HD media player playback, they want the best quality, if possible, everything original. However, this is not a good idea. Not any HD media player can replace a Blu-ray Disc player so far. Even there are HD media player boxes that lets users to add a Blu-ray Disc drive (e.g. Popcorn Hour C-200), they do not give you full features. Normally you have main movie but lose the menus and special features, and this is called simple BD-navigation.

But most HD media players only read Medias from HDD. That's why people need get Blu-rays ripped first. When ripping a Blu-ray to HDD, there are quite a lot of formats to save the movie to : ISO, BDMV, M2TS, MKV, and whatever video format you like. Many guys choose ISO because it keeps everything original of the Blu-ray movie. Well “everything original” includes the menus and features and some other files that your HD media player can not play. Without them you can save 3GB or more for a single Blu-ray movie.

And "everything original" also means the 1080p video of very high bitrate, up to 7.1-channels HD audio and PGS subtitles. Now the question is, can your HD media player decode TrueHD and DTS-HD codec? If not, can it pass-through them to an audio receiver that supports these codecs? If not again, you’ll have to down-mix them during Blu-ray ripping, say converting DTS-HD to Dolby Digital 5.1 audio or AAC stereo with ByteCopy, otherwise you’ll watch a silent film… The good news is, not every Blu-ray has 7.1 audio- many Blu-ray Discs still use Dolby Digital codec for main audio stream.

If audio codec is not a problem for you, and you don’t care much about subtitles (captions), MakeMKV is your choice- it rips Blu-ray to MKV with main movie, original audio tracks and subtitles. And 30 days' free trial. You wanna have subtitles displayed on HDTV when playing ripped Blu-ray? Choose ByteCopy then. It converts the PGS subtitles to DVD subtitle format, which is definitely acceptable by HD media players. It also lets you extract .srt subtitles for MKV file, including forced subtitles.

Pavtube ByteCopy -The Best Blu-ray to MKV Ripper for HD Media Players and HTPC

* Flexible. You decide which streams to keep, what codec to use, and what quality to export.
[*]Bitrate – A higher bit rate allows better video quality and also results in bigger file size. Roku 2 plays maximum bitrate at 8Mbps, but the fact is many people find video created at 3000kbps looks pretty good on HDTV.
[*]Frame rate- Select either 24 or 30.
[*]Audio channel- By default it exports AAC stereo (2 channels) audio, which is acceptable by Roku box. Dolby Digital (AC-3) 5.1 surround sound, you need to set the output format to "HD Video>> H.264 HD Video (*.mp4)" in step 4, and then set audio codec to ac3, channels to 5.1 channels in Profile Settings window. Also note that you must have TV or receiver capable of decoding Dolby Digital 5.1, since the Roku 2 box passes-through the audio via optical cable instead of decoding the multi-channel audio by itself .

Convert/backup Blu-ray/DVD to MKV with AC3 (Dolby Digital) and DTS 5.1 surround sound

Most Blu-ray and DVD ripping tools keep one audio track only, that’s why I turned to Pavtube ByteCopy, which rips BD and DVD to MKV with more than one audio streams and subtitle tracks. The Pavtube ByteCopy not only keeps multiple audio tracks, which is actually the purpose of MKV format, but also lets me to encode audio streams to Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1 and AAC 5.1 audio. The software also allows full preservation of High Def audio formats - DTS HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital TrueHD, LPCM 7.1 channels. In the following guide I’d like to share with you how to keep both AC3 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio when ripping Blu-ray movie to MKV with Pavtube ByteCopy.

Guide: Copy Blu-ray/DVD to MKV with AC3 and DTS 5.1 audio tracks

You may download a trial of Pavtube ByteCopy and try ripping Blu-ray to MKV with AC3/DTS 5.1 audio streams.

Load BD/DVD movie to Pavtube ByteCopy
Run Pavtube ByteCopy, and click “Load Disc” button to import movie files from copy-protected Blu-ray Disc/DVD. Tip: You need a BD drive to read Blu-ray Disc.

Set AC3 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio track
A common DVD has AC3 5.1 track with DTS 5.1 track as optional audio. A Blu-ray Disc can include AC3 5.1, DTS 5.1, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA audio. Pavtube ByteCopy lets you keep the original AC3 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio and down convert HD audio (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA, LPCM) to AC3 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio.

Solution A. Select and keep original AC3 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio.
Once the movie source is opened you will see its contents as a tree structure. For each Title you can click the plus sign to view detailed information such as video codec, size, audio codec, language, subtitles and so on. Generally, the main movie is included in the first title (Title1). When there are AC3 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio in original BD/DVD, simply select them and the Pavtube ByteCopy can copy these audio streams to MKV file with video stream and subtitles.

1. Expand Title 1 and you can find all video, audio and subtitle streams.
2. Check the audio of AC3 6 channels and DTS 6 channels to get Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 surround sound. Uncheck the audio tracks you don’t want to keep.
3. Select the whole disc, and click the “Edit Disc” button.

4. When the “Edit Disc” screen pops up, you just select “lossless” in “Format” box and click “OK” to confirm.
5. Back to the main interface and click the big “MKV” button to start copying BD/DVD to MKV with selected Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio tracks. Multiple audio streams and subtitles can be preserved in MKV file.

Solution B. Encode HD audio (Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA, LPCM) to AC3 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio
When the original BD/DVD movie contains Dolby TrueHD, DTS-MA audio only, you can encode these HD audio streams into Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio.
1. Select Title 1 which contains the main movie.
2. Click “Edit Title Streams” to set AC3 5.1 and DTS 5.1 audio.

3. In “Edit Title Streams” interface, switch to “Audio” tab. Tip: you may shrink/encode BD movie under “Video” tab.
4. Tick “Check” box keep an audio track, “Encode” box to convert the audio track. To keep 5.1 audio, set “6” in “Channels” drop-down box.

5. When everything’s settled down, back to the main interface and click the big “MKV” button to start ripping BD/DVD to MKV with converted Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 audio tracks.

In this way you make MKV files from BD/DVD with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 surround sound and lossless video stream included. Have fun.

Well, MKV format has a number of advantages comparing with other formats. To short in one sentence, because MKV format allows for lossless Blu-ray/DVD video quality with all subtitles and audio streams included, and not yet any other format can achieve this. Find below detailed reasons why MKV is much favored by movie enthusiastic.

Advantage 1. Chapter info, multiple audio and subtitle streams can be preserved.
The MKV format is capable of holding unlimited number of video, audio and subtitle tracks, along with any metadata. Practically this means that it is possible to put entire movie with multiple sound and subtitle tracks, chapter information and movie thumbnail into single file. When copying Blu-ray movie to MKV, you can have all subtitles and audio tracks sealed into the MKV file.

Advantage 2. Lossless quality can be retained when ripping Blu-ray Disc/DVD to MKV.
MKV is a container format that supports various codecs, including H.264, VC-1, AC3, DTS, etc. Basically Blu-ray movie clips are saved as H.264/MPEG-4 encoded .m2ts files with AC3 or DTS audio (a small percent of BD movies use VC-1 codec and PCM 5.1 audio). The compatibility of MKV format makes it possible to keep original H.264 codec when converting M2TS clips to MKV files. By directly package video contents into MKV container without en-decoding, lossless video quality is retained and the process is shorted to 1-2hrs.

Advantage 3. MKV format is widely supported by media players.
MKV is open and free. No one holds patents or licenses and anyone can implement it freely. As a result nearly every software player and many hardware devices support it. The best software players out there ( VLC, MPlayer ) have full MKV support and are absolutely free.

Advantage 4. Can anything be more flexible?
Want to remove unneeded audio track from the file? Thought about converting MPEG-2 video into H264 to make the file 5 times smaller? All of it can be easily done with free software. And it supports soft subtitles and external subtitles!

These are the reasons why Pavtube ByteCopy takes MKV as the exclusive export format for backing up Blu-ray Discs and DVDs. By converting BD/DVD to MKV format with Pavtube ByteCopy, you can

get lossless BD/DVD backup with all subtitles and audio tracks included;

pass-through the HD audio encoded with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-MA into MKV file;

keep original BD/DVD chapter markers, and other meta data.

When/If the device you’re using is not powerful enough for 1080p full HD playback, the in-laid H.264, AC3 and DTS encoder helps you to

down convert 1080p .m2ts videos to 720p/480p .mkv file;

down convert HD audio into AC3 and DTS 5.1 audio;

transcode VC-1 encoded Blu-ray movie into H.264 encoded MKV file.

About MKV (Matroska Media Container)
The Matroska format is a multimedia container envelope for video, audio and subtitle files. An entire CD or DVD can fit inside a single file. The extension for a Matroska file containing video is MKV; for audio only MKA, and for subtitles only, MKS. The MKV format has many advantages over competing containers like Microsoft®’s Audio Video Interleave (AVI), Apple®’s Quicktime® MOV, Moving Pictures Experts Group (MPEG) and others. While each of the container formats in use today fulfills some or even many of the features desired in a container format, Matroska aims to be the standard that meets them all, setting it apart from virtually all others. Built on EBML (Extensible Binary Meta Language), it is highly flexible for meeting future needs.

If you feel like watching Blu-ray and DVD movies on the Archos 101 tablet, here’s an useful app that converts BDs and DVDs to Archos 101 supported video formats up to 1080p at fastest speed- the Blu-ray Ripper. Now with the support for CUDA, the time-proving Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper adopts new GPU acceleration method for encoding Blu-ray contents, improving the ripping speed to three times faster. It takes less than 2hrs to rip 90min Blu-ray Disc to 1080p video now. In addition, the new released Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper v3.7 has been upgraded to crack Blu-ray MKB v19 copy-protection, which means new released Blu-ray movie like Toy Story 3 and Eclipse can be freely ripped to Archos 101 and any other device you like. Pavtube offers free and clean trial that allows you to access all the functions.

Follow the below guide to copy Blu-ray and DVD to Archos 70/ 101:
Required Hardware: PC with Blu-ray Disc drive
Required Software: Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper (you may download a trial version of the Blu-ray to Archos Converter and try it out)

A step-by-step guide of converting Blu-ray Disc/DVD to Archos 101 optimized videos:
Step 1. Run the Blu-ray DVD to Archos Converter and import source media.
Click “BD/DVD ROM” to load your source Blu-ray or DVD movie. It usually takes a few seconds to load your Blu-ray movie from target BD drive. When all the movie clips are loaded to file list, check the main movie and leave the unwanted files unchecked. The main movie is distinguished by its length (duration). So check the longest Title. You could view it in preview window.

Step 2. Select desired episodes of the movie and set subtitle/ audio track.
If your sources are video files, please skip this step. For BD/DVD to Archos 70/101 conversion, you may set audio track and subtitles. To set Audio track, click on the Audio box and select an audio track with desired language. Set subtitles in the same way. There is a box of “Force Subtitles” too. In preview window you can observe the effect.

Step 3. Set output format for converting Blu-ray movies to Archos 101 tablet
To play videos on Archos 70/ 101, you need to set a compatible format for the tablet. Pavtube Blu-ray DVD to Archos 101 Converter provides presets for Archos 5, Archos 7, Archos 605, Archos 705, Archos 704, Archos 504, Archos 604, etc. You may click on the pull down menu of “Format” to choose a format for the tablet.

Converting DVD movies to Archos 101: Set “Archos”>>“Archos 5/7 AVI Video (*.avi)”, then click on “Settings”, find video “Size” in the Settings window, and put in 720*432 so that the DVD (NTSC, 720*480) will not lose aspect ratio when watching on Archos 101 tablet.

Ripping Blu-ray Disc to Archos 101: When converting HD video (16:9) and commercial Blu-ray movies to Archos 101, you can keep the HD video quality by selecting “iPad”>> “iPad HD Video (*.mp4)”. This format creates 720p H.264 MP4 video that plays just fine on Archos 101 internet tablet.

Step 4. Start converting Blu-ray/DVD movie to Archos 70/101 video.
Now click "Convert" button to start ripping Blu-ray and DVD movie to Archos 101 video. CUDA is on by default so the Blu-ray movie can be converted to Archos video soon. When the conversion is finished, click “Open” button to get the final output files for your Archos 101. You can tick “auto shut down computer after conversion” box so that the app will shut down your PC upon the completion of ripping.

Tip:
1. Wanna maintain higher quality when converting Blu-ray to Archos 101 videos? Just set a higher bitrate before conversion starts. Simply click “Settings”, find “Bitrate” in Video column, and set it higher, note that 6000kbps is the maximum bitrate supported by Archos 101, so do not set bitrate higher than 6000kbps.
2. You may also learn more information about the NVIDIA CUDA encoding method.

“Can your Blu-ray Ripper product copy ALL subtitle and audio tracks to an H.264 MKV output file?” I wrote to many providers of Blu-ray ripper software several months earlier, hoping to figure out a way to keep all BD subtitle and audio tracks into one MKV files. The result was depressing. It appeared that only one subtitle language and one audio track can be selected no matter what Blu-ray ripper I use. However, I happened to came across newly released Pavtube ByteCopy Bluray to MKV Ripper software the other day, which does the right thing I need! The software rips disks (Blu-ray Disc and DVD) with all subtitle and audio tracks and makes it possible to make perfect copies of my video library to my hard drive. I love it! And I believe you’ll love it too, as the software does more than copy BD contents in lossless way- it also allows you to shrink a 25GB BD to 10GB and meanwhile keep the original AC3/DTS 5.1 audio.

See below how to copy all Blu-ray subtitle and audio tracks to an H.264 MKV file (surely with video streams included)

Step 1. Run Pavtube ByteCopy Bluray to MKV Ripper, and click “Load Disc” button to import movie files from copy-protected Blu-ray Disc/DVD.

Step 2. Click the “Convert” button to start backing up Blu-ray movie to MKV files with all audio tracks and subtitle streams. Pavtube ByteCopy will extract the main movie with all subtitles and audio tracks from disc and packages the contents into MKV container without transcoding to ensure you get lossless movie clips.

After conversion you may click “Browse Export Path” to find generated MKV file. Note that Pavtube ByteCopy backs up BD/DVD as fast as your drive can read data. If you just want to keep part of audio and subtitle, just uncheck in file list the ones you don’t want. In this way you get lossless backup of Blu-ray movie and meanwhile keep subtitles and audios you want.
